Grammar School Admission
For parents seeking an academically rigorous environment within the state sector, grammar schools represent a path of exceptional opportunity. These schools consistently dominate national league tables, with over 97% rated ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. Their students achieve vastly superior GCSE results, with an average grade 8 compared to the national average of grade 5, and are more than twice as likely to progress to a top Russell Group university. This proven track record of academic excellence makes entry incredibly competitive.
In many selective regions, it is common for more than 10 children to sit the 11+ examination for every single place available. Securing a position is therefore a significant achievement, awarded solely to those who demonstrate exceptional ability in this challenging entrance test.
Understanding the 11+ Exam
The 11+ Exam
The 11+ exam is a selective entrance examination used by grammar schools and some private schools in the UK to identify the most academically able children for admission in Year 7.
It’s crucial to know that there isn’t one single 11+ exam. The format, subjects, and exam providers (for example GL Assessment) differ between regions, local authorities, and even individual schools. Most 11+ exams are built around four key subjects:

English
This section tests core literacy skills, including comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, and spelling.
Maths
Questions are based on the Key Stage 2 curriculum but often require a deeper logical application of concepts in arithmetic, problem-solving, and data handling.
Verbal Reasoning (VR)
This tests the ability to solve problems using words and language, involving logic, code-breaking, and identifying patterns in words and text.
Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR)
This assesses the ability to solve problems using pictures and diagrams, testing skills in identifying patterns, similarities, and differences in shapes and code.
